Technical definition of bitcoin
The First Cryptocurrency
Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency, without a central bank or single administrator, that can be sent from user to user on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network without the need for intermediaries.
Transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. To determine the legitimacy of a bitcoin blockchain, the network adheres to the rule that the longest chain, with the highest accumulated proof-of-work, is considered the correct one.
Bitcoin was created in 2009 by an unknown person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The cryptocurrency operates on a proof-of-work system which helps to prevent double-spending, a significant problem for digital currencies, and creates new bitcoins in a process known as mining, where participants offer their computing power to verify and record bitcoin transactions into the blockchain.
Bitcoin remains the largest and most recognized cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
